Dubai Design District (d3), UAE

Where architecture behaves like design

Creativity needs a place to live.

In Dubai Design District, architecture was designed to reflect the energy of the industries it hosts. Fashion, design studios, galleries, and creative businesses all come together in a district where buildings themselves become part of the creative expression.

Located in Dubai, the development consists of a cluster of contemporary mid-rise buildings arranged along vibrant streets and public spaces. Instead of neutral office blocks, the architecture introduces dynamic façades, sculptural forms, and shifting shadows that change throughout the day.

One of the most distinctive elements of the buildings is the façade itself. Aluminium elements fold outward from the glass envelope, creating a three-dimensional pattern that gives each elevation movement and depth. The façade behaves almost like a piece of design; bold, expressive, and constantly interacting with light.

The façade challenge

Designing façades for a creative district means balancing visual identity with performance.

The buildings required façade systems capable of supporting large glazed surfaces while integrating external aluminium elements that create the district’s distinctive architectural texture. At the same time, the systems needed to meet demanding performance standards for wind resistance, structural stability, and solar protection in Dubai’s climate.

TECHNAL solution

TECHNAL developed façade systems tailored to the architectural concept and performance requirements of the project.

The development incorporates the TECHNAL unitised curtain wall system, enabling the integration of the sculptural external shading elements directly into the façade envelope. This modular façade approach allowed the buildings to maintain a clean glazed surface while introducing depth, rhythm, and solar shading across the elevations.

Across the district, approximately 1,900 façade panels were engineered, tested, fabricated, and installed within a six-month construction program, demonstrating the efficiency of the unitised façade system for large urban developments.

Architecture that performs

Beyond aesthetics, the façade system contributes to the performance of the buildings.

The integrated aluminium shading elements reduce solar exposure while enhancing occupant comfort. Combined with the structural strength of the curtain wall system, the façade delivers durability and high performance suited to the demanding environmental conditions of Dubai.

The result is a building envelope that supports both the architectural ambition and the functional needs of a modern creative district.
