Extension of a townhouse: A project focused on nature
CTN House, Montpellier (34)
A renovation and extension project for a life open to the garden
The owners of a 1930s townhouse acquired this property a few years ago. As their family grew, expanding the home became a priority. The rear garden, previously underutilized, turned into a valuable resource they wanted to embrace, making the most of the changing seasons and surrounding nature. To meet this need, the architecture firm Brengues Le Pavec proposed a two-phase project: renovating the existing structure and creating an extension.
A respectful renovation and an extension open to the outdoors
The firm chose to preserve the existing 100 m² structure, dedicated to intimate and protected sleeping areas. The extension, on the other hand, was designed to be fully open to the living spaces. This elongated and luminous volume spans 85 m², featuring large LUMEAL sliding doors and fixed SOLEAL frames for a refined treatment of glazed corners. These aluminum joinery elements were specially adapted by TECHNAL-approved specialist Daniel Bories to maximize transparency, seamlessly blending interior and exterior spaces.
Joinery designed to maximize natural light
LUMEAL concealed-opening sliding doors and SOLEAL fixed frames ensure optimal natural light throughout the extension. With slim and discreet profiles, they enhance the fluid transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The joinery is elegantly integrated, with hidden tracks in the floor and recessed frames in the ceiling, creating total transparency while maintaining the minimalist design envisioned by the architect.
A modern design inspired by the Farnsworth House
The extension draws inspiration from Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe’s iconic Farnsworth House. Its rational and bold black sanded 2100 metal structure alternates between glass and lounge terraces, fostering a harmonious dialogue with the outdoor environment. The choice of black sanded finish extends to TECHNAL joinery, ensuring visual cohesion and refined aesthetics. These elements allow occupants to fully embrace outdoor living year-round, whether under the midday sun, autumn rain, or the first winter snowfall.
A staircase linking the extension to the renovated home
A staircase was designed to connect the extension to the existing house, which was also renovated using TECHNAL solutions: SOLEAL windows and NOTEAL sliding shutters. This selection ensures thermal performance, aesthetics, and easy maintenance while complementing the overall architectural vision.
A townhouse with a strong connection to nature
This extension project has redefined the living spaces by creating a seamless flow between the interiors and the garden. Thanks to TECHNAL joinery, the home benefits not only from optimal energy performance but also from a contemporary aesthetic that highlights the surrounding natural elements. Open and minimalist, the extension invites occupants to fully enjoy the lush setting in every season.
