/ ENVIRONMENT, CLIMATE AND BIODIVERSITY

To contribute to solving our common global challenges, we need to produce and consume in new ways. As a part of the Hydro Group, our ambition is to contribute to the creation of a fair society and a circular economy.

Our environmental management targets key industry challenges, including climate change, biodiversity, waste and emissions to air.

Our environmental ambition is to minimise our footprint by proactively managing our impact on biodiversity and by promoting efficient resource and waste management across the value chain.

Our environmental strategy and long-term environmental ambitions emphasises our improvement efforts on a number of key challenges that exist in the aluminium industry.

/ WE ARE COMMITTED TO REDUCING EMISSIONS IN OUR OWN OPERATIONS, AND HELPING OUR CUSTOMERS AND SOCIETY TO DO THE SAME

Producing aluminium has an impact on the environment: locally where we operate and globally due to greenhouse gas emissions. The main inputs related to our production are bauxite, energy and water use. As part of the leading fully integrated aluminium company, we are responsible for operating in an environmentally conscious way.

By continuously improving the way we produce aluminium, we strive to minimise the impact our activities have on the environment, especially in biodiversity, water stewardship and climate change.

Hydro's 2030 environment strategy and long-term environment ambitions emphasises our improvement efforts on a number of key challenges that exist in the aluminium industry.

/CLIMATE STRATEGY

We define our ambition and role in decarbonisation based on two pillars:

  1. Becoming a net-zero company
  2. Deliver zero-carbon aluminium products to our customers

/CLIMATE

The objective of the Hydro Group is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2025. Through greener sourcing and greener production, we also aim to help our customers in reducing their emissions by providing greener products.

Currently, aluminium is experiencing the fastest-growing demand among all metals in the world. The main reasons for this are its low weight and high strength. Aluminium is key to zero-energy buildings, and innovation and technology development are the key enablers toward CO2 free processes.

The graph below shows the reduction of CO2 emissions for our Tewkesbury Head Office site.

/NET-ZERO

As a part of the Hydro Group, we are on track to reduce our own CO2 emissions by 10% by 2025 and 30% by 2030 from the baseline set in 2018.

We are committed to net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.

/NET-ZERO PRODUCTS

Hydro are developing zero-carbon greener aluminium to meet market expectations and to enable our customers around the world to lower their carbon footprint.

The main pathways for us to achieve our goals are more recycling of post-consumer scrap aluminium and technological advances in the creation of primary aluminium like carbon capture and storage.

Accelerating our commitment to sustainability, as a part of Hydro, we have become the first aluminium building system company to manufacture door, window and curtain walling profiles from 100% recycled aluminium - Hydro CIRCAL 100R.

The new recycled material is produced from 100% post-consumer recycled aluminium. This means it is possible to specify profiles with a near-zero carbon footprint (0.5kg of CO2e / kg of aluminium on average) - the lowest in the world.
