How to look after aluminium windows and doors

Aluminium is a low-maintenance material that is notably easy to look after. To maintain the pristine condition of the aluminium in your TECHNAL window frames, we have outlined 4 uncomplicated yet potent tips below.

Aluminium windows are becoming increasingly popular largely due to their durability, sleek aesthetics and low-maintenance appeal. To ensure they stand the test of time and maintain their vibrant look, it's important to care for them properly. We have 5 top tips to make sure your products remain in the best condition possible for your home.

5 TIPS TO LOOK AFTER YOUR ALUMINIUM WINDOWS AND DOORS

1. Regular Cleaning

  • Frequency:

To maintain the appearance of your aluminium windows and doors, clean them every 3-4 months. In coastal or urban areas, monthly cleaning is recommended because of a more corrosive and/or built up environment.

  • Method:

  1. Use warm water mixed with a mild detergent (like washing up liquid)

  2. With a soft cloth or sponge, gently clean the aluminium surfaces

  3. Avoid abrasive cleaners or materials like polishes and steel wool as they can scratch the aluminium and remove paint and coatings

  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any detergent residue

2. Remove any dust, dirt and particles

Dust, dirt and other debris can accumulate between the rails of sliding doors and compromise their proper functioning, the removal of rainwater or the ventilation system. To avoid these problems, simply hoover them out with the small tip of your vacuum cleaner. To protect the finish, you may wish to use the brush attachment.

3. Check and lubricate moving parts

Over time, the moving parts of your doors and windows may become stiff or noisy. Apply a little lubricant in the window and door mechanisms (hinges, locks, moving parts) once a year. It's recommended to use a small brush to ensure the lubricant is spread evenly and to remove any excess with a clean, dry cloth.

Caution: The wheels in the leaves of your sliding or folding door are self-lubricating so they do not need any additional lubricant applying.

4. Prevention is better than cure

If you're doing work on your home, remember to protect your windows and doors, because cement, paint or plaster can be difficult to remove. Place protective tape on profiles and joints and remove it when the work has been completed. If you are using metal materials near your windows, be careful to hoover any residues that may slip between the moving parts to ensure they don't cause any damage.

5. Check for damage

  • Inspect Seals

The seals on your windows and doors can degrade over time, affecting insulation and could lead to leaks. Check seals annually for wear and tear. If you are concerned or find damage, contact your local TECHNAL fabricator for advice.

  • Inspect Hardware

Check all supporting elements like hinges regularly for any signs of damage. If found, contact one of our fabricators as the strength and stability of various components will need to be checked, especially if they are load-bearing parts.

DON'T FORGET

Location matters

Of course maintenance of your windows and doors will make a difference in their longevity, but you may need to increase the frequency of this depending on where you are located. In city spaces, pollution and smog diluted in rainwater will cause soiling to build up. In coastal areas, saltwater residues can accumulate. In both of these scenarios, more frequent cleaning and rinsing with water can help to prevent any damage to your home.

Avoid harsh chemicals

Prevent scratching and damage to your windows by avoiding the use of abrasive cleaning agents or solvents. Similarly, avoid specialist cleaners for other metals like copper, brass, silver or raw aluminium.
