Technal’s GXi sliding balcony door was used for a pioneering and award-winning housing scheme in York. Sixth Avenue is the first factory-built multi-storey affordable housing development to be completed outside London.

Designed by Cartwright Pickard Architects and built off-site by Yorkon, the four storey modular building comprises 24 high quality apartments providing a mix of 3, 2 and 1 bedroom homes.

Finished in dark grey to complement the western red cedar and terracotta cladding, Technal’s FXi46 aluminium casement windows and GXi sliding balcony doors were selected for their long-term durability, contemporary appearance, energy efficiency and low maintenance qualities.

The systems were installed in the apartments off-site at the module manufacturer’s production centre in York. The steel-framed apartment modules were then craned into position at Sixth Avenue in just a few days, complete with bathrooms, kitchens, plumbing, doors and windows. This highly innovative method of construction improved build quality, accuracy and significantly reduced the programme time to less than 15 months from inception to completion.

GXi is a robust and high specification sliding window and balcony door, which was used at Sixth Avenue to allow access from each apartment to a generous timber-decked balcony or private garden.
