among first buildings using
double glazing in Manila

The Joy Nostalg Center is a 42 storey building made of hotel (Oakwood), offices and bank (AUB) that stands elegantly in the Ortigas skyscape.

and installed 19000m² curtain-wall with design windload 3700Pa and max 5550Pa, mostly GEODE grid effect curtain wall and GEODE flush glass facade.

A new regulation for
French Overseas Departments

As of May 1, 2010, French Overseas Departments must apply the new Thermal, Acoustic and Ventilation Regulation, which aims to limit the use of air-conditioning and promote natural ventilation whilst ensuring acoustic comfort. It is true that the 4 French Overseas Departments have a specific climate: tropical on Reunion Island (located in the Indian Ocean), in Guadeloupe and Martinique (in the Caribbean Sea) and equatorial in Guyana (South America).

This law is very important as its target energy consumption in French Overseas Departments includes 50% of all energy provided by renewable energies in 2020 and 100% by 2030. It will also lead to improved air quality and hygrothermal comfort by promoting natural ventilation.

Present in the French Overseas Departments for over 25 years, Technal offers sophisticated solar protection, blackout and ventilation solutions adapted to these harsh climates and in compliance with this new regulation.

The SUNEAL brise-soleil offer (read the SUNEAL article - Technal News #3), designed for building envelopes and glass curtain walls, allies design and technical skill. The SUNEAL brisesoleil comes in a large size and can be fixed or mobile to follow the sun’s path. note: it can be equipped with photovoltaic blades.

The NOTEAL shutter range (read the NOTEAL article - Technal News #2) is an adaptable solar protection solution for business and residential buildings. Hinged or sliding, equipped with fixed or movable blades, NOTEAL shutters provide both cover and natural ventilation.

The SAFETYLINE jalousie window is also designed for business and residential buildings. It plays an essential role in ventilation, window blackout and solar protection.

TOPAZE patio-doors, windows and sliding windows (if you require more information on TOPAZE, click here) offer Air, water and wind performances that comply with the climatic constraints of tropical regions. Turn/tilt designs or open-in applications with opening restrictor and the composite sliding SAFETYLINE Jalousie window (designed to withstand category 5 cyclones) provide an effective solution allowing natural ventilation.

The Lagon building causes a sensation
The Lagon building designed by architect Brahim Daroui (Anonym’art Architecture SARL agency) has just been completed. Located in Fort-de-France, overlooking the Caribbean sea, its facade is causing a sensation... just opposite the Yole building. Explanations.

Martinique

The facade of this 4-story office building is in the shape of a wave created using a GEODE curtain wall with a horizontal element and with hidden openings and SUNEAL brise-soleil in the form of offset aeroplane wings. This curtain wall incorporates Antalios semi-reflective glass.

“The building's curve counter-curve design adapts it to the configuration of the plot and its size has been achieved by expanding on an initial building that we also designed six years ago, the Yole, so named as its size metaphorically retraces the characteristic outline of the traditional Martinique skiff (yole). We wanted to create a similar statement with the Lagon building but on a larger scale given the size of the plot", explains Brahim Daroui. "As with the Yole, the Lagon looks over Fort-de- France Bay and the Caribbean Sea with its curtain wall fitted with Antalios semi-reflective glass and a brise-soleil to offer protection from the heat of the setting sun."

An exterior passageway dividing the premises on the road facing facade is equipped with the double post GYPSE balustrades with stainless steel cable. At level 5, an open terrace rooftop is equipped with a single post GYPSE balustrade.

At the corner of the building, overlooking the sea, an enclosed panoramic lift is perfectly incorporated into the brise-soleil layout.

Two doors opening onto the balcony were manufactured with a bonded glazing to enable their integration onto the bare face of the curtain wall. This creation has been perfectly pulled off by FACE company with the use of a comprehensive range of Technal products including the GEODE curtain wall, SUNEAL brise-soleil, SAFETYLINE Jalousie windows, TOPAZE doors and GYPSE balustrades.

The FACE Company, located in Lamentin, near Fort-de-France, a long-standing customer of Technal, focuses its activity on major community projects. Its manager Gérard Richard has carried out studies of this project in strict collaboration with Technal concerning the technical development of the curtain wall screening.

Technal draws in the crowds
at the Glasstech Asia show
The professional Glasstech Asia show 2010 took place from June 29 to July 1 in Marina Bay Sands (read the Marina Bays Sands article - Technal News #2), in Singapore. The Technal stand – only aluminium process development engineer at the show – impressed architects, consultants, developers and companies who flocked to the stand. Remi Rezeck El-Zouki, HBS Sales Manager in the South East Asia region for Thailand, Singapore and Australia, explains the reasons behind this success.

According to Rémi Rezeck el-Zouki, "what really set the stand apart was its architectural quality and the well-known distinctive Technal design.” As they browsed the 120m² of stand area, the 200 recorded visitors were able to discover the scope and versatility of Technal's products, which meet regional market expectations: GYPSE balustrade, GEODE curtain wall Horizontal Trame version and Flush facade version, SUNEAL brise-soleil and its application with integrated photovoltaic modules, TITANE door, SAFETYLINE motorised jalousie windows, etc. “Visitors showed a particular interest in the LUMEAL sliding system and the SOLEAL casement window due to their exceptional design and their outstanding thermal performance”, added Rémi Rezeck el-Zouki.

One of the main focuses at this year's Glasstech Asia show were the environmental solutions presented by manufacturers in the "Green" tent. HBS south east Asia Manager Joe sleiman promoted Technal’s brise-soleil and curtain wall integrated photovoltaic solutions.

“Glasstech Asia 2010 signifies a real launch of the brand in Singapore following highly successful projects that have already been completed in the country such as Marina Bay Sands” claims Rémi Rezeck el-Zouki. “Since this show, our Technal product presentations have attracted a lot more people...”
