TECHNAL SUPPLIES GLAZING SYSTEMS FOR £25m SOCIAL HOUSING SCHEME – WITH A CHOCOLATE THEME

Architectural glazing systems specialist, Technal, has supplied around 600 aluminium window and door systems for a new £25m mixed tenure affordable housing scheme in East London.

Developed by East Thames Group and constructed by Galliford Try plc, Taylor Place is built on the site of the nineteenth century Taylor Brothers chocolate factory in the centre of Bow.

Designed by architects Stock Woolstencroft, the scheme has created a lively and vibrant new environment, providing 158 one and two bedroom apartments in four blocks for rent and New Build Home Buy (part-buy, part-rent), together with 2,214sqm of accommodation for commercial and community use.

Taylor Place is built around a landscaped urban square and includes a 16-storey tower which has extensive views across London and the River Lea. In recognition of the site’s history, each block has been named after a type of chocolate confectionary.

The apartments feature large picture windows, fabricated and installed by United AG using Technal’s high performance FXi65 casement system in both fixed light and tilt/turn configurations, complemented by the FXi52 balcony doors. The new MX Visible Grid curtain walling is used for the four storeys which are set back at the top of the tower, and for the commercial units on the ground floor.

According to Project Architect, Ewout Vandeweghe of Stock Woolstencroft, “Our specification requirements were for aluminium systems that met the aesthetic, and large picture windows with sections that are as slim as possible for the construction budget. Technal’s systems help to set off the architectural form and the strong identity of each block and contrast with the contemporary claddings selected to reflect the diversity of the surrounding architecture.”

Technal’s window and door systems were installed into rainscreen or brick cladding in punched hole configurations and are interspersed with aluminium panels and buff-coloured ceramic panels.

The FXi65 casement window system features a highly efficient 19mm flush polyamide thermal break for enhanced thermal performance and improved aesthetics. It can be supplied in a wide choice of configurations, including fixed lights, top, side and bottom hung, and tilt/turn, and will accommodate 17mm up to 48mm glazing units for further design flexibility.

This system is Technal’s most technically advanced casement window to date, achieving the highest classification for air permeability in tests up to 600 Pa; it is fully watertight up to 1200 Pa, and is rated up to the equivalent pressure of 2000 Pa for wind resistance.
