TECHNAL COMPLETES FIRST UK APPLICATION OF NEW CURTAIN WALLING SYSTEM

The first UK application of Technal’s new MX BG beaded curtain walling system has been completed.

Designed by architects EPT Partnership and located in the Rhymney Valley in South Wales, the project is the striking new headquarters for Williams Medical Supplies, one of the largest suppliers of medical equipment and pharmaceuticals in the UK.

The recently launched MX BG system has a flush externally beaded frame to create a ‘picture frame’ appearance for the building façade. It uses the same mullion and transom grid as other design options in the MX curtain walling suite, allowing specifiers to vary the aesthetics of a building without the need for additional interface detailing and construction.

According to Project Architect, John Evans at EPT Partnership, “The client’s requirement was for a highly glazed building that would be a flagship for the company. The Technal range gave us the quality we required, a choice of façade options and met our budget requirements.”

“MX BG is a rear frame system, which has a shallow, almost flush profile and recessed joints between the glazed panels. This allowed us to achieve the appearance we were looking for, on the main entrance elevation and for the full height atrium.”

Technal’s visible grid curtain walling was used for the west elevation with top hung FXi46 windows inserted as horizontal bands at each floor level to naturally ventilate the building. The system carries units glazed in Pilkington green tinted solar control glass and aluminium panels that conceal services between floors and under the roof line.

Glass to glass joints were fabricated at the corner of the MX BG façade and the interface with the grid curtain walling. The top transom of the MX BG curtain wall was also angled to follow the sloping roof line. Sun shading is provided by vertical brise soleil and the projecting eaves of the pitched roof.

The curtain walling systems were finished in a low maintenance grey polyester powder coating and fabricated and installed by Vision 2000 UK.

Technal’s MX BG curtain walling system features a number of innovations and technical advancements, which include:

  • A patented ‘hook and toggle’ system to facilitate installation
  • A system that is dry glazed in the factory onto carrier frames
  • A single frame that can easily be removed from the inside using a special tool
  • An EPDM internal compression gasket to make the system fully air tight.

MX BG can carry 30mm to 36mm glazing and is available as a flat façade or faceted up to 3º for further design flexibility. The system has been fully tested to BS EN standards for wind resistance, water tightness and air permeability, giving specifiers the reassurance of a proven, high performance curtain wall.
