TECHNAL SUPPLIES MORE THAN 1,000 WINDOWS AND DOORS FOR ONE OF LEEDS BIGGEST RESIDENTIAL SCHEMES

Architectural aluminium glazing specialist, Technal, part of Hydro Building Systems, has supplied more than 1,000 windows and doors for a new £36m riverside apartments scheme in Leeds.

Designed by Brewster Bye Architects and developed by Mayfair Developments, City Island is one of the biggest city centre residential projects to be built in Leeds.

Technal worked closely on the £1.7m glazing contract with Fox Aluminium who fabricated and installed the systems. Technal’s faceted curtain walling was also supplied for the double height penthouse apartments. The system follows the curved roof profile and supports brise soleil sunshading to the living rooms on the south-facing elevations.

City Island comprises three buildings of up to 15 storeys high, built around a central landscaped courtyard. The scheme provides 404 individually designed apartments and penthouses, which make use of the attractive river and canal views.

Commenting on Technal’s involvement in the project, Matthew Seddon, Project Architect at Brewster Bye Architects, said, “We have specified Technal’s products on other schemes and so were confident in the quality and long-term performance of their systems.”

“This scheme had a demanding specification for acoustics, which we were able to deliver using the FXi door and window systems, whilst maintaining visual continuity across the project – a key factor in the design.”

Tilt/turn windows from Technal’s FXi46 suite were used in punched hole and tall ribbon configurations, and FXi52 patio doors open out onto the balconies for all the apartments. Infill panels were used between floors to separate the doors and give the appearance of continuous strips of glazing. All the systems were finished in dual colours – dark grey on the outside and light grey internally, with clear double glazing.

The FXi window and door range was developed as a fully integrated suite to meet specifiers’ requirements for performance, durability and aesthetics. The technically advanced framing system has clean, narrow site lines and is available in three module sizes, giving architects and contractors the flexibility to deliver enhanced thermal performance in line with the latest Building Regulations.

Other architectural features of the City Island project include private wedge-shaped balconies to every apartment, an open courtyard with ponds and bridges at the centre of the development, and a striking shaped roof, which cascades to form the larger duplex apartments at the upper levels. Two of the penthouses have roof top ‘observatories’ with panoramic views of the Leeds skyline.
