Architectural aluminium glazing specialist, Technal, in partnership with fabricators, Quest Solutions, is supplying around 1,500 windows for the new £250m Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.
Due to open in autumn 2011, the new 86,000 sqm acute hospital is part of a £311m PFI project for Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, developed by Consort Healthcare – a joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Haden Young.
Pivot windows from Technal’s FXi46 range have been specified to provide natural ventilation and ease of cleaning on the upper floors of the 700-bed hospital. Fixed lights and top hung windows from the FXi65 suite are being supplied for the other areas of the hospital.
Technal’s FXi window and balcony door range is available in three module sizes – 46mm, 52mm and 65mm, and a wide choice of configurations to meet individual project requirements. It incorporates a highly efficient flush polyamide thermal break for enhanced thermal performance and can be integrated into curtain walling or used as punched hole, composite and ribbon windows.
Fabricated and installed by Quest Solutions in a £2m contract for MPG Façades, the windows for Pinderfields Hospital will be inserted into cedar cladding, render and brickwork. The systems will be finished in a durable dark grey polyester powder coating and are double glazed using a combination of clear toughened glass, laminated, low emissivity or solar control glass to suit the different elevations and orientations.
The specification of the opening lights meets the building’s ventilation and access strategies, and is in full compliance with Secured by Design requirements, using advanced locking and restrictors for the ground floor and other accessible areas.
Commenting on the design, Liz Broadhead, Design Manager at Balfour Beatty, said, “Pinderfields is conceived as two parallel wings – for acute and inpatient services – linked by a public atrium, with other blocks radiating from the centre to form a series of courtyards. Natural daylight, fresh air and outside views are key design features for the scheme.”
“The specification is for a high quality aluminium window system, and Technal’s window products met all the design criteria for factors such as performance, durability, security, energy efficiency, frame type and ease of use for patients and staff.”
Designed around the needs of patients, clinicians and visitors, the hospital will have 46 departments providing a wide range of facilities including pathology, women’s and children’s units, an outpatient’s rehabilitation institute, full acute services, regional burns unit, diagnostics, spinal injuries department and critical care.
