NEW APPLICATION OF TECHNALS FAÇADE SYSTEMS HONOURED IN TWO MAJOR ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS

Todd Architects’ city centre Whitehall Square development in Belfast has won two major architectural awards – the Laganside Award for Regeneration 2002 from the Royal Society of Ulster Architects, and an RIBA Award 2002.

Developed by the Carvill Group, this landmark mixed scheme of apartments and retail units features extensive use of aluminium glazing systems from Technal, including around 500 windows and balcony doors from their recently launched and fully integrated FXi suite.

The development was described as “a modern interpretation of the traditional perimeter block…..designed to promote urban renaissance”. It provides 121 one, two and three-bedroom apartments across four and five floors, in addition to 8,000sqft of retail space for five units at ground floor level. Many of the apartments are dual aspect, looking out towards the city and offering peaceful views over the feature landscaped inner courtyard.

The varying roof line is created from two-storey roof penthouses and three-storey pavilions which enclose the courtyard on four sides. This design forms a natural sun trap and ensures the development complements the roof lines on its external boundaries.

Fabricated and installed by Saint-Gobain Solaglas, Belfast, a range of systems from Technal were used at Whitehall Square. Double height sloped MC curtain walling to the living rooms of the penthouse apartments allows views over the courtyard. The system also encloses the impressive atrium at the corner entrance.

Glazed in clear toughened glass, dual colour windows and balcony doors from Technal’s FXi52 range were finished in a low maintenance dark blue polyester powder coating externally to contrast with the white rendering and brick cladding, and white internally complementing the stylish interiors and solid maple wood floors throughout. The systems incorporate elegantly curved profiles for a more contemporary appearance, and an efficient 15mm flush polyamide break for superior thermal performance.

Fully tested to British and international standards, the FXi52 range has a number of reassuring security features such as internal glazing and multi-point espagnolette locking. The system can be supplied in a range of configurations to suit most applications, including fixed lights, top and side hung, bottom hung, tilt-turn and balcony doors.
